20 Reasons Moms Are Magical
1. They Sacrifice Their Body During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is insane. Some women say they actually enjoy it which I will never comprehend. Nonetheless, whether you love the process or not, pregnancy is an incredible physical sacrifice of love.
During pregnancy, your body is not your own. Your body turns into an incubator and is only concerned with making sure that little baby is growing and thriving. Often, that comes at the expense of the mother’s comfort. That was definitely my case.
I had intense heartburn, nausea, back pain, headaches, fatigue, mood swings, wild hunger, and on and on. It was probably one of the least comfortable experiences of my life.
And still. When I look at my most darling boy, I think, “I’d do it all again for you.”
Moms are magical.
2. They Sacrifice Their Body After Pregnancy
I was so excited to give birth. Rather, I was excited to no longer be pregnant. For some reason, I thought that giving birth meant I would have my body back.
Wow, was I wrong. It didn’t seem possible that my body would be LESS of my own than it was during pregnancy, but gosh golly, wouldn’t you know that after popping a baby out, my body somehow becomes even less of my own. I was at the mercy of my new, teeny, tiny human.
Isaiah owned my boobs. In fact, he still does. I’m one of those weird, long-term breast feeders. I hear you judging me. It’s ok. I’m confident in my choices.
My body has really never been less of my own. Isaiah insists to be held, fed, comforted, nurtured, etc 24/7. How dare this mini human need me so much! Well, he does, and I’ve decided that he’s worth it. The sacrifice is worth it. Besides, boobies and cuddles solve literally every meltdown, tantrum and moment of discomfort he experiences. Why would I cut him off from the very thing that actually works??
Is it a crazy physical and mental sacrifice? It sure is. But I’m a mom. And I’m magical.
3. They Put Their Baby’s Needs Before Their Own

Mama definitely takes a backseat a lot of times in life. She does that because she usually loves her little babes so intensely, it hurts. I know my mom did, and so do I. I love my little Isaiah so much, my heart literally aches sometimes.
Some people might argue that mothers need to look after themselves more and not sacrifice themselves so much. I would agree with that line of thinking.
But, if you’re a mom, you know it’s not that easy to just stop making sacrifices for your babies, even when they are older. My mom made a ton of sacrifices for me. That’s just what moms do. It’s our nature, and it’s really hard to go against that intuition to go to any lengths to make sure your babies are ok.
Mamas sacrifice beyond what most humans are capable of. Why? Because moms are magical.
4. They Put Their Life On Hold
Moms are magical because they put their life on hold.
Now, I’m going to say something that you might not agree with, and that’s ok. While there are many areas of my life that seem to be “on hold” simply for the fact that I literally do not have the time right now to commit to everything I used to do (hello 16 month old who demands every moment of my day), I would also argue that my life has just begun. Or rather, this season of my life has just begun.
Are there things I can’t fully commit to right now? Heck yes. At the same time, there are so many new parts of my life and new parts of me that I get to unpack and discover.
So, yes, there are definitely things that I can’t quite do like I used to, and in that sense, my life is on hold or paused. But it’s not forever, and the new parts of me that are being birthed in the meantime are well worth the “giving up” of parts that I don’t have capacity for at the moment.
I’m like a caterpillar who is being birthed into her butterfly season.
Mamas are magical butterflies.
5. They Wear Practical Clothes For Breastfeeding

For the first year of my baby’s life, I wore breastfeeding appropriate clothing. I breastfed on demand and still do. Thankfully, my bub can go a lot longer in between boobie sessions, and when we are out, he usually doesn’t even think about them. These days, I can sometimes wear some of my old clothes, but even now, I have to wear things that are boobie accessible.
I miss wearing my beautiful clothes whenever I want to. Being practical isn’t fun, and I don’t know if you’ve seen the breastfeeding attire from 2023, but it ain’t cute. Sure, brands are trying to be cute, but they’re just not.
I put my baby’s nutrition and health above my desire to wean him and wear my cute stuff again. Breastmilk is liquid gold, and I’m willing to wear the boring stuff in order to ensure he gets an abundance of that gold.
Now that’s magical. Moms are magical.
6. They Give You Half Of Their Favorite Meal
I love food. I mean, I LOVE food. When we go to a restaurant and I order my favorite things, I won’t even let my husband have any of it.
Then I had a baby. My baby loves food. He might even love food more than me.
Here’s where things change. When I have food that I love, and my boy wants it, I give it to him. Heck, I give him as much as he wants. That is the true love of a mother right there. I won’t even give it to my husband who works outside the home to sustain our life.
It’s gotten to the point where I have to wait for Isaiah to go to bed before I eat certain things. For instance, I adore cauliflower crust pizza. It’s pricey, but it’s delicious. My boy also loves it. When I make it, he eats an alarmingly large amount, always leaving me hungry. In order to get my fill, I have to wait until he goes to bed to have my beloved pizza because I am powerless to his cuteness and will give him all of it.
Why? Cause I’m a mom. Moms are magical.
7. They Give The Best Cuddles

Mom cuddles are the best cuddles in the entire universe. My mother passed away about a decade ago, and gosh, what I wouldn’t do for a good mom hug right now. Her arms were the arms that have held me since birth. How could there be anything better than that?? My body just knew her comfort.
My boy loves my cuddles. While he loves my husband, I am the only one that can calm Isaiah when he’s in distress. My arms and cuddles are medicine to him. My cuddles and embrace assure him that he is safe and sound in the arms of someone who would give up the world to make sure he’s ok. You can’t beat that kind of cuddle.
Mom cuddles are the best because moms are magical.
8. They Rub Your Back For Hours
Who doesn’t love a good back rub? Or a good back scratching? I prefer scratching to rubbing but it’s the same concept.
When my mother was alive, she would rub and scratch my back for as long as I wanted her to. Even though she’s no longer on earth, when I close my eyes and think about her, it’s as though I can feel her fingers running along my back. I really, really miss those moments. One of her favorite things to do was to take her finger and write letters on my back to see if I could guess the letter.
I will do the same for Isaiah. I will play those same games, and I will rub or scratch his back as much as he wants. He enjoys a bit of a back rub now, but it also tickles him so he mostly just laughs. I look forward to the days when he asks me to rub his back. It will always bring me back to memories of my own mother.
My mom was magical.
9. They Make Your Favorite Food

Not all moms are amazing cooks, but I guarantee every kid has at least one favorite thing their mom makes.
My mom made the most amazing taco salad. I’ve tried recreating it, and it just doesn’t taste the same. It doesn’t have her love.
Moms go the extra mile to make your favorite food. In every cultures, food is a language of love, and when the kids come home, mom makes the foods they love most. When the kids feel loved, mama feels loved.
I can’t wait for the day when Isaiah asks me to make his favorite food. The very thought of it makes me want to cry.
Food is comfort. Moms are comfort. And, you guessed it: moms are magical.
10. They Wait Up For You When You Go Out
When we become teenagers, the thought of mom waiting up for us when we go out is cringe inducing. It’s embarrassing. Don’t they trust us? Don’t they know we are responsible humans?
It’s not about trust. It’s about love. Now that I’m older, I can see this.
My mom used to wait up for me when I was younger, and it annoyed me to no end. I always felt like she was checking up on me and making sure I wasn’t doing anything wrong.
But now that I’m older and have my own baby, I see things differently. When Isaiah gets older, I will most definitely wait up for him. It’s not because I don’t trust him. It’s because I love him so massively, and I just will need the assurance that he has returned home and it ok. What will I do when he moves out? I don’t know. Put a tracking device on him??
Moms feel safe when their babies are safe. They wait up for them at night. Moms are magical.
11. They Send You Cookies Wherever You Are In The World

Moms are the best at creating care packages to send to their children. Whether their kids are away at college, in the armed farces, living abroad on a wild adventure or working in another part of the country or world, no one sends a care package as thoughtful as a mom.
Take, for instance, my own mother. I lived and worked in China for about 6 years, and she sent me an endless stream of care packages. When one arrived, she would immediately ask, “What do you want in the next one?” Her specialty was no-bake cookies, and I requested them every time. I didn’t care that they arrived in crumbles. I ate them with a spoon and was happy as a clam.
Now, I understand that maybe not every mom has done this, and not every human has experienced a mom who has done it. But, let me tell you from experience, that it’s something that NEEDS to be done and experienced by every mom and child. If your own mom didn’t do this for you, make it a point to do it for your kid. They will love you for eternity.
Moms who send crumbled cookies in care packages across the world are extra magical.
12. They Never Forget Your Birthday
The person that birthed you likely has a pretty good recollection of that day and will so for the remainder of their life. A mom never forgets a birthday.
I’ve been through two miscarriages, and I even remember the days I lost my two babies. I’ll never forget, and I’ll celebrate those birthdays every year. You might think that’s weird, but it’s important for me to remember my babies, no matter if they lived on earth or not.
Celebrating a child’s birthday is also a celebration of the day you entered or re-entered another chapter of motherhood. In essence, mom AND baby were born on that day, so there’s a good reason for mothers to have that day etched in their heart.
My mom was always one of the first people to call me on my birthday. Well, actually, my grandmother always made a point to be the first, but my mother was never far behind. I don’t know how my grandmother always beat her to it. Maybe they had a deal worked out. My grandmother loved being the first one to sing to me every year. I miss her. And I miss my mom.
Moms make birthdays special no matter how old you get because moms are magical. But you already knew I was going to say that.
13. They Don’t Complain To You About How Hard The Baby Stage Was

As a new mother, the baby stage has been a level of hard that I never fathomed. I literally had no idea just how difficult it was going to be.
My mother had three kids. She never once complained to me about how hard the baby stage was for her. Not once. Either I don’t remember it or she really never said a word about it.
This is shocking to me because my mother actually complained about many things. You’d think the sleeplessness and emotional, mental, and physical toll of the newborn stages she encountered would have been the topic of conversation at some point.
But it wasn’t. She never complained.
Now that I’m a mom and going through this challenging baby stage, I can kind of understand why she never mentioned it. It’s because she just adored us. To her, the love was greater than the sacrifice she made.
I can see the same thing happening to me. Now that Isaiah is passed the newborn stage, I feel like I’ve forgotten the worst parts and actually long for those days. They were so hard but so sweet.
Moms love fiercely, and even though it’s sometimes the most draining experience of my life, I would do it 100 times over. I will never complain to Isaiah about how hard the baby stage was for me. I will only tell him how much I miss those newborn snuggles.
Call your mom and thank her for all the love she gave you in the baby stage because it was a HARD stage.
Moms are magical.
14. They Love You Through The Challenging Phases
Not only do moms love you intensely during the newborn phase. They also KEEP loving you through all the challenging phases of life.
Toddlerhood. Elementary years. Puberty. Awkward Junior High. Insecure High School. Uncertain college years. Unhinged adulthood. They love us through it all. And they likely continue to see us as their sweet little babies.
Life is messy. Growing is messy. Learning life lessons is messy. And yet, through it all, moms are with us in it.
The love of a mother wraps us in comfort throughout life, no matter what our age. Now that is magical.
15. They Console Their Baby Through The Night

I have slept with Isaiah since he was born. Don’t even try to tell me that I was putting him in danger by doing so. I won’t listen. I did plenty of research on co-sleeping and evaluated the risks vs benefits in my own situation, and the benefits far outweighed the risks for our family. So don’t come at me.
I have absolutely zero regrets about co-sleeping. It gave me instant access to Isaiah when he needed me in the night. He’s never been a great sleeper, so he woke more than most people would be able to put up with. Most nights, I was ok with it. I didn’t see him as some annoying baby who needed to learn to put himself back to sleep. Rather, I saw him and still see him as a tiny, tiny human who is still so new to the world and just needs the love of his mama.
Many countries find the need for comfort in the night to be absolutely normal, and I find it really heartbreaking that our society has a tendency to have a 9-5 comfort rule. From sun up, to sun down, you may need me. After that sun goes down, you’re on your own kid.
That’s not my style, and if you’re on this blog, it’s likely not your style either. But if it is your style, that’s ok. Disregard this point. You’re still magical.
However, I think it’s safe to say that moms are magical because they respond to their babies even through the night.
16. They Cut The Crust Off Your Bread
Moms go the extra mile and do the little special things because they know it will make you smile.
Whether it’s cutting the crust off your bed, using your favorite detergent when you come home, buying OJ without pulp, putting the special candies in the jar when you come home for a visit, or whatever it is that makes you smile, moms just know those little things that make their babies happy. I say babies even in reference to adults here because a mama’s baby is always her baby. Your mom knows you. And you know your own baby.
You know which boobie your baby prefers. You know the way they like their banana peeled and cut. And you do it for them. You do it because you’re a mom. Your mom does it because she’s a mom.
Go find your mom and hug her. And go find your babies and make them hug you. You’re amazing, mama.
17. They Take You Places They Don’t Love

My Isaiah loves to go to this specific playground.
I don’t love it. He always gets insanely dirty and we end up needing a bath every time we go. Yet I take him often. He experiences so much joy when we go, and why would I keep him from joy simply because I don’t like that he gets dirty? After we go to the playground, we take a bath. Big deal. His joy is worth it.
My mom loved to go to Target with me. She didn’t care so much about Target, but she loved me and loved to see me happy. When she was still alive, she told me many times that one of her favorite things to do was go to Target with me. That was about the sweetest thing in the world.
Moms just love to see their kids happy. If Isaiah loves to go to the auto parts store when he’s older, I will gladly accompany him even though I don’t give a rip about car stuff.
Moms really are magical.
18. They Go The Extra Mile To Create Good Memories
Not every person has an abundance of good childhood memories. For some reason, I struggle to remember many good memories from my childhood, and that makes me sad.
While I certainly will not be able to give Isaiah a perfect childhood, I know I can make some effort to ensure he has an abundance of positive memories in his bank to pull out when he’s an adult.
Making good memories doesn’t have to entail spending a lot of money or doing super extravagant things. It can be very simple things.
When I was a very small girl, I remember my grandmother would let me sit on her lap while she peeled an apple for me. I would watch in wonder as she tried to peel the apple in one continuous strip. That small act was so entrancing and special to me. It’s one of my favorite childhood memories.
Mothers do go the extra mile to create memories, but even the smallest of events can hold incredible meaning and wonder for your child. Moms are the best at creating magical memories.
19. They Read The Same Book 100 Times

Everyone knows that kids like to read the same book over and over and over again. Before I had my own children, the idea of reading a book multiple times was horrific to me. As funny as it sounds, I dreaded that phase before we ever reached it.
We are now entering said phase, and I am 100% stunned to discover that with my own child, this annoying practice does not bother me one bit.
How can that be?
Well, it’s simple. I love him, and he loves specific books and experiences such intense joy when we read them. I love seeing that crazy joy in his eyes. Every time we read “Goodnight Moon”, it’s like we’re reading it for the first time. I wish I had that kind of wonder in life.
Reading a book many times is a small act of love. Sure, it can be annoying once you’ve read the same book 5 times, but to them, it’s magic. And that is why moms are magical.
20. They Love You Just The Way You Are
There’s nothing I would change about my son. Ok. Maaaayyyyybe if I could snap my fingers and he’d magically become a wonderful sleeper, I’d do that. But that’s not happening, so I accept even that part of who he is.
I love him because he’s my son, not because of what he does or doesn’t do. If my love for him was based on his actions, the love would waiver whenever he did something I wasn’t 100% happy with. My love for him has been constant and has even grown over time, as hard as that is for me to fathom.
Moms love with their whole being, and they love unconditionally. Sometimes, the love is overwhelming, and I don’t know how to process it, but that’s what it’s like to be a mom. The love is intense and overpowering, but it is that way for a good reason. This little person was in you. They grew in you. They were birthed from you. They were a part of you and will always be a part of you even when they are an adult.
A mamas love truly is magical and brings a level of confidence and comfort matched by no one else.
Keep loving your baby fiercely, because mama, your love is truly magical.
Wrapping Up The Magic

There’s no way around it. Moms are the most magical beings.
The list I have come up with is somewhat of a personal list for ways that I’ve experienced my own mother, mothers that I’ve adopted as my own, and from my own journey of motherhood even though I’m just at the start.
I know not all humans have experienced all the things I’ve listed above. This list is not the absolute defining list of magical mother characteristics. You will have your own points to add based on your experience. I’d love to hear them. What characteristics do you have to add to the list? Let me know in the comments below. What little things did your mother do for you to let you know you were loved? What do you do for your own children? I can’t wait to hear from you!
