Age Is Just A Number: How A 2-Year-Old Boy and 99-Year-Old Woman Formed A Friendship Through A Fence

Grab a tissue, you’re going to need it. The pandemic was such an incredibly difficult time for so many of us, but even in the midst of all of the struggles, beautiful stories have emerged. This is the story of how a 2-year-old and a 99-year-old formed a friendship through a fence.

Benjamin is a 2 year-old boy. Mary is a 99 year-old woman. They are neighbors and have a simple metal fence separating their backyards. Through the years, Mary lost her sons and husband so she lives alone in her home. Her grandchildren live in different states, so Mary is often alone.

The pandemic only magnified the fact that she was alone. Little did she know that there was a little boy living right beside her that would soon steal her heart.

When the lockdowns went into effect, little Benjamin would venture out to the backyard to play. Because of the pandemic, he had never had a friend outside of his own family.

Until he met Mary.

Ben and Mary met one day when they were both getting some fresh air outside. There was an instant connection and the two quickly began creating fun ways to interact through the fence.

One of their first games they created was called Cane-Ball. Ben rolls the ball to the fence, and Mary pushes the ball back to Ben with her cane. They blow bubbles together, laugh together, and built an unbreakable bond even though the world had shut down. Mary even brought out some of her son’s old toy trucks and gave them to Ben to play with. Those trucks are older than he is!

Eventually, the pandemic ended, and the fence door opened up. Now, Ben and Mary don’t have to stay at a distance, and their friendship through a fence is now a friendship that will only grow stronger.
