Who doesn’t love a good color matching game? My son is very into colors these days, so I’m coming up with all of the color matching, sorting, identification games I possibly can. There are so many fun and easy ways to get a good grasp on colors. This cotton swabs and rigatoni coloring matching game doubles as fine motor skill practice, too. You can’t beat that!

When Do Toddlers Learn Colors?

While it’s important to understand that every toddler is unique and develops at their own pace, there are some milestones that typically happen around the same time for most toddlers.
Around the age of two to three, toddlers begin to grasp the concept of colors. They start by recognizing basic hues like red, blue, and yellow, often through playful activities and interactive experiences. Through everyday encounters with toys, books, and nature, they easily pick up the different names of colors. Their little brains are sponges, soaking up all the colorful knowledge through play!
Games are a great way to solidify color knowledge and introduce even more colors! So let’s get to our game.
Cotton Swabs And Rigatoni Color Matching Game
The cotton swabs and rigatoni color matching game is suitable for children aged 2-5. It is so simple to put together that your children can help with the construction of the game materials, too.
Gather The Necessary Materials

You really won’t need much for this game. You might even already have all of the items in your home.
Here’s what you’ll need to prepare:
- Uncooked rigatoni pasta (this is the only pasta that works for this particular game)
- Cotton swabs
- Paint. I used 4 different colors but you can use as many as you like.
- Baking sheet lined with parchment paper (no, you’re not baking the noodles)
- One plastic or Styrofoam bowl for each color of paint
Prepare The Rigatoni and Cotton Swabs

The prep for this game is an activity in itself! This is definitely a kid-friendly kind of prep, so let your littles help with this part. My son was so excited to help.
First, gather enough small bowls so you have one bowl for each paint color. Pour a small amount of paint into each bowl.
Pick up one rigatoni noodle, and dip both edges into one of the paint bowls. You don’t need to color the entire noodle, just the tips will do. Prepare as many as you want of each color. I did 4 rigatoni noodles for each color but you can do more. Place the noodles on the lined baking sheet and dry.
While the noodles are drying, grab your cotton swabs. Continue the dipping process with the swabs and ensure you have enough paint dipped cotton swabs to match the number of noodles you prepared. Place the dipped swabs on the baking sheet to dry with the noodles.
Let’s Play!
After the noodles and cotton swabs have dried, it’s time to play!
The instructions here are minimal. Simply put the items in front of your toddler and let them go at it. I had to show my son one example so he knew what do to, but he caught on very quickly and had them all done in no time! He loved it!
Additional Rigatoni Color Matching Games
Here are three additional color matching games you can try with these materials and a couple of extra items.
Multi-color Rigatoni/Cotton Swab Match

This is exactly the same as the original game, but this time, dip each end of the rigatoni noodle into a different color and a cotton swab to match. Now, your child will have to match two colors at a time. This version is a little more difficult, but just as fun.
Pipe Cleaner/Rigatoni Color Match
This game uses the original color dipped rigatoni noodles from the main game. You won’t need the cotton swabs for this version.
Instead, grab some pipe cleaners in the same colors as the dipped noodles. Your chid will then thread the noodles onto the pipe cleaners.
This was my son’s idea. We already had pipe cleaners attached to a piece of cardboard from a previous game: pipe cleaner and cereal threading. After we finished matching the cotton swabs and noodles, he got the pipe cleaner board and wanted to thread the noodles onto the pipe cleaners. GENIUS.
Rigatoni/Scarf Color Matching
This version is a little tricky for little fingers, so it’s better suited for older toddlers. However, you can still let your younger kiddos give it a try. I let my son try, and he got frustrated. He’s a bit young for this one.
All you will need for this is some sensory scarves and the dipped rigatoni noodles. We love sensory scarves, so I’ve got plenty laying around.
This game requires threading a scarf through a corresponding color dipped rigatoni noodle. The visual effect is so cool after you’ve got a few noodles on a scarf. My son liked playing with the noodle scarves. They make amazing necklaces.
Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this rigatoni noodle and cotton swab color matching game. There are so many fun variations, and I’m sure you’re already brainstorming your own ideas. Happy matching!
