Being a stay-at-home mom is a wild ride of non-stop stimulus. We are constantly needed, touched, cried for, etc. The brain overload can be extremely intense. It’s so important that we find ways to process those feelings of overstimulation. Art therapy is a great way to do that. In this article, you’ll learn 6 ways moms can process emotions through creative expression.
Why Art Therapy?

Art therapy for moms is a gentle and accessible path to explore and process emotions. Through creative expression, moms bypass the limitations of language and tap into their inner world, allowing emotions to surface and be acknowledged without judgment. The outcome of the art is not so important, it’s the process that makes this practice so valuable.
Art therapy provides a non-verbal means of communication. It allows moms to express complex feelings and experiences that may be difficult to articulate verbally. This process of externalizing emotions through art can be incredibly validating and empowering. It allows moms to honor and validate their emotional experiences. Making space to release the emotions throughout the week is important for moms who want to maintain their overall sense of sanity.
In addition to providing a release of emotions, art therapy engages the senses and stimulates the release of endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin. These neurotransmitters are associated with feelings of pleasure, happiness, and relaxation. As moms immerse themselves in the creative process, they experience a natural uplift in mood and a reduction in stress and anxiety. We all need a mood boost!
Art therapy also fosters a sense of mindfulness and presence, as moms focus their attention on the act of creation and immerse themselves in the sensory experience of art-making. This mindful engagement with the present moment allows moms to cultivate a deeper connection with themselves and their emotions, leading to greater self-awareness, resilience, and emotional well-being.
6 Creative Ways To Process Emotions

1. Daily Doodles
As a kid, I remember my mom doodling all the time. I loved to watch her scribble nonsense on a napkin while she was on the phone or doing other things. Now I realize this was probably her own form of therapy. I’ve also picked up the habit now that I’m a mom.
This is an easy daily practice to incorporate into your busy mom life. Keep a journal and set aside a few minutes each day to doodle freely. Use colored pencils, markers, or crayons to draw whatever comes to mind. Let your hand move intuitively without worrying about making it perfect. Doodling is a simple way to release stress and express your emotions without words.
2. Emotion Collage
Creating a collage of your emotions is not only therapeutic, it can also result in a really stunning piece of art.
Collect old magazines, newspapers, and catalogs. Flip through them and cut out images, words, and phrases that resonate with your current emotions. Paste them onto a piece of paper or a collage board to create a visual representation of how you’re feeling. This activity helps you explore and process your emotions in a creative and tangible way.
3. Mood Mandalas
A mandala is a circular design with intricate patterns and symbols. It is often used in meditation and represents the universe or wholeness.
Create your own mandala.
Draw a circle on a piece of paper and divide it into sections like slices of a pie. In each section, use colors or patterns to represent different emotions you’re experiencing. Let your intuition guide you as you fill in the mandala. This mindful activity helps you connect with your emotions and find balance within yourself.
4. Emotion Painting

Painting is one of my favorite ways to express my emotions. There is just something so beautiful about putting a brush to paper or canvas.
Set up a painting station with watercolor paints, brushes, and paper. Tune into your emotions and choose colors that reflect how you’re feeling. Use broad strokes, splatters, or gentle washes to paint your emotions onto the paper. Let the colors blend and flow freely as you express yourself through painting.
Don’t be concerned about what the painting looks like. This is simply a way to get your emotions out, not create the next Mona Lisa.
5. Mindful Coloring
Invest in a few adult coloring books or print out coloring pages from the internet. Set aside some quiet time each day to color mindfully, focusing on the sensation of the pencil or crayon on the paper and the rhythm of your breathing. Choose colors that reflect your current mood and let the act of coloring soothe and center your mind.
I color every day, either with my son or on my own. It instantly calms my brain. I created a set of 14 beautiful coloring sheets for mamas. Get the free downloadable printables HERE.
6. Vision Board Creation
Who doesn’t love a good vision board?
Gather magazines, images, quotes, and other materials that inspire you. Create a vision board by arranging these elements on a poster board or corkboard. Include images that represent your goals, dreams, and aspirations, as well as those that evoke the emotions you want to cultivate. Spend time with your vision board regularly, visualizing your desired outcomes and connecting with the feelings they evoke.
Conclusion
Art therapy isn’t some woo-woo idea. The benefits are real, and it is crucial that moms find a way to release all of the pent up emotional stress from motherhood.
I hope you found a few ideas here that sounded fun to you. Art therapy should also be fun and offer a break from the pressure of the day.
