Introducing Toddlers to Jesus with Prayer, Play, and a Little Bit of Hide-and-Seek

I never expected a 2-inch plastic Jesus to completely transform our mornings — but here we are.

Like many moms, I was looking for a simple, meaningful way to help my toddler connect with God. But let’s be honest… three-year-olds aren’t exactly known for quiet reflection or lengthy prayers over coffee.

So I got creative. And I started with a tiny Jesus.

Hiding Jesus — Literally

It all began with a tiny figurine of Jesus I found tucked in our craft bin. One night, I had the idea to hide Him somewhere silly — inside a sock, behind the couch pillow, nestled in a cereal box. The next morning, my son woke up and went on the hunt.

And he loved it.

Now, every single morning, I hear the excited shout from his bedroom:
“Where’s Jesus?!”

He races around our apartment searching for Him like it’s a holy game of hide-and-seek. And when he finds Him, we head straight to the kitchen table, sit down, and pray together.

Our Morning Jesus Time

It’s not fancy. There’s no script.

We pray for the day. We pray for our family and friends. We thank Jesus for donuts or pancakes or blue skies. Sometimes the prayers are heartfelt. Sometimes they’re silly. But they’re always real — and they’re ours.

This little routine, sparked by a playful moment, has become one of the most sacred parts of our day.

Why It Works

Toddlers learn through play, movement, and repetition. So instead of trying to force a serious devotional time, I met him where he was — curious, playful, and full of energy.

By physically “finding Jesus” each morning, he’s developing a habit of looking for Him every day — both in his heart and in the world around him.

This is a gentle, joy-filled way of introducing toddlers to Jesus without pressure or perfection.

A Simple Invitation

If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to introduce Jesus and prayer to your toddler, this might be the sweet spot you’ve been searching for. All you need is:

  • A small figurine (Jesus, a cross, a heart — whatever works)
  • A willingness to hide it every night
  • A few minutes each morning to pray together after the “find”

It’s not about doing it perfectly. It’s about building connection — with your child and with God — in a way that feels natural and joyful.

Final Thoughts

My son may not be quoting scripture or sitting still for a Bible lesson, but he’s waking up excited to find Jesus. And that, to me, is everything.

He’s learning that Jesus is someone to seek, to spend time with, and to talk to. That prayer is a conversation, and that faith can be fun.

So if you hear a toddler yell, “Where’s Jesus?!” from across the hall — that might just be the start of something holy.
