Why I Created the Little Hearts Scripture Cards
Creating a set of Easter story cards for kids might seem like a simple idea, but for me they are something deeply personal. Some of my earliest memories of learning about the Bible come from my kindergarten classroom, where our teacher would hold up beautiful illustrated story cards and tell us the stories of Scripture. I can still picture those images in my mind today. Those simple pictures helped the stories come alive in a way that stuck with me for years.
As a mom now, I started thinking about how powerful that kind of visual storytelling can be for young children. Little ones learn through images, conversation, and imagination. I wanted my own child to hear the incredible story of Jesus—not a watered-down version, but the real story of His love, sacrifice, and resurrection—in a way that felt gentle and meaningful for a young heart.
That’s what inspired me to create the Little Hearts Scripture Cards, including this set of Holy Week story cards. My hope is that these heirloom-style watercolor cards help families slow down, open the Bible together, and walk through the Easter story one moment at a time.
The Little Hearts Holy Week Story Cards
This set of Easter story cards for kids includes 13 illustrated cards that guide children through the events of Holy Week. Each card represents an important moment from the final days of Jesus’ life on earth, helping children see how the story unfolds step by step.
The 14 cards include:
- Jesus entering Jerusalem as the people wave palm branches
- Jesus cleansing the temple
- Jesus teaching the people in the temple
- Judas agreeing to betray Jesus
- The Last Supper with the disciples
- Jesus praying in the Garden of Gethsemane
- Judas identifying Jesus with a kiss as soldiers arrest Him
- Jesus carrying the cross
- Jesus being crucified
- Jesus being placed in the sealed tomb
- Mary Magdalene arriving at the tomb and finding the stone rolled away
- Mary weeping at the tomb and seeing two angels
- Jesus appearing to Mary for the first time
- Jesus appearing alive to His disciples and showing the scars in His hands
Each card uses soft heirloom-style watercolor artwork to help children imagine the scene and engage with the story in a visual way. When the cards are read together, they create a clear and powerful timeline of the events of Holy Week.
Guided Story and Discussion Questions
To make these Holy Week story cards even easier to use, each card also includes a short guided story written in simple language for young children. The goal is to stay true to the real events of the Bible while explaining them in a way that little ones can understand.
Each card has just two or three sentences, making it easy for parents, grandparents, teachers, or Sunday school leaders to read the story out loud while showing the illustration.
Along with the guided story, this printable also includes 15 open-ended questions designed to spark meaningful conversations with children. These questions invite kids to think about what the people in the story may have felt, what the moment might have looked like, and why the events of Easter are so important.
I recommend you cut the question cards out. Place them in a small box, bag or any other type of container. Allow your child to grab one question at a time. If you’re in a group, this is a great way for children to take turns sharing their thoughts. It’s a great interactive tool to get kids thinking about the story and imaging how they might have felt if they were there.
Instead of simply hearing the story once, children are encouraged to engage with the story, ask questions, and talk about what it means.
