Use More Than Just Crayons

I know crayons are the go-to when it comes to coloring, but I encourage you to expand your toddler’s coloring resources. There’s an entire world of color to be explored in different mediums.
- Markers
- Dot stampers
- Paint
- Colored pencils
- Twistable crayons and colored pencils
- Gel crayons
Did you even know so many options were available to you? Each option will present an entirely different experience for your toddler. It’s vital that they are able to explore, feel different textures, and create in new ways with new tools.
Don’t be afraid to step outside the box. It’s more fun when you live outside the rules.
Change The Coloring Environment For A New Experience

I typically set my son up on his little art table inside, but I’m venturing outside with him more. He absolutely loves doing “indoor” things outside. When he gets bored with familiar activities, I take him outside to switch things up.
Oddly enough, when I do change the environment, it’s like the activity is completely new to him. Coloring and creating outside is also great for their little brains as they get plenty of fresh air and sunshine.
If you have space outside on the lawn or on an outdoor patio, you can also put a little art table outside. That way, you still have a hard surface to color on. However, going rogue is highly encouraged. Color on the grass, in the dirt, wherever those little feet venture off.
When you let the little ones take the lead and make the plans, you never know where you’ll end up. I quite like it that way.
