7 Simple Salt Science Experiments For Toddlers

You might think it’s hard to do science experiments with your toddler, but you’re likely just overcomplicating things. Toddlers don’t need beakers and crazy chemical liquid compounds to wow them. These 7 salt science experiments are perfect for introducing your toddler to the incredible world of science. I know you will also be delighted!

1. Egg Salt Balancing Act

Did you know you can balance an egg on top of another egg? You’re about to find out!

For this fun experiment, you will need two hard boiled eggs, a little stand of sorts for one of the hard boiled eggs, and some salt.

First, take your egg stand. You can use a scotch tape roll or construct your own little cardboard sleeve to ensure the egg is securely standing in place.

When the egg is secure, place a little mound of salt on top of the egg. Grab the second hard-boiled egg and carefully place it on top of the salt mound. When that egg is sitting securely, slowly take your hand away and watch the magic!

Count with your toddler to see how long the egg can balance on top! When it falls, don’t worry about the mess. It’s just a hard boiled egg! No mess to clean up here.

2. Floating Egg Vs Sinking Egg

This little trick is a great way to show the difference between sinking and floating.

You’ll need two drinking glasses (glass is best so you can clearly see what’s happening) and two eggs.

Fill each glass with the same amount of water. In one glass, put 3 big spoonfuls of salt and give it a good stir. Leave the other glass as is.

Place an egg in each glass and watch what happens! Which one floats? Which one sinks? How in the world does that work?

3. Salt Rope Trick

Your toddler will be amazed when they see a piece of rope magically pick up an ice cube. Do you think it will work? Let’s find out.

For this experiment you will need an ice cube, a piece of rope, and some salt.

Put the ice cube on a level surface. Place the rope on top of the ice and sprinkle some pinches of salt over the rope and onto the surface of the ice. Watch as the ice melts and the rope binds to the ice. Pick up the rope. What happens? The rope will remain attached the ice. Incredible!

4. Static Salt

You won’t believe how simple this trick is, and I’m sure your little one will be eager to try this one themselves.

For this experiment, you will need a balloon and salt. That’s it!

First, blow up a couple of balloons so everyone has one. Next, sprinkle a layer of salt on the table. Rub a balloon on your hair to create some magic. Take note of where you rubbed the balloon because you’ll want to put that same spot on the salt. Watch as the salt attaches to the balloon.

So easy, right?

5. Penny Cleaning Salt Solution

This next experiment is so cool. The end result will be sparkling pennies. We love that!

For this penny cleaning activity, you will need vinegar, salt, pennies, a drinking glass, and a pair of tweezers.

Pour 2 spoonfuls of salt into the glass jar and fill with vinegar. Give it a good swirl to mix things up. Using your tweezers, pick up a penny and place it in the salty vinegar solution. To really show the magic of this experiment, place the penny half-way in so only one half is clean. You will see a clear difference in the two halves.

Repeat this process until all of your pennies are shiny and sparkling clean.

6. Salty Or Sweet?

Do you prefer sweet or salty? This experiment will satisfy both tastes, no sugar involved! I don’t know how this works, but it does.

To experience the wonder of this trick you will only need salt and flour.

In a small bowl, place a spoonful of salt. Give it taste. Ooh! That’s salty. You prefer sweet? Add a few spoonfuls of flour to the small bowl and mix the flour and salt together. Mix it well. Give it another taste. What happened? It’s sweet now! MAGIC.

7. Salt And Soda Balloon Blow Up

You might be familiar with this experiment, but it’s one that never ceases to amaze me. With this experiment, you will watch balloons inflate without blowing them up yourself! I know your child will be in complete shock when they see this one.

For this science salt experiment you will need salt, big balloons, and fresh bottles of soda. Using a small funnel, fill a deflated balloon with 3 spoonfuls of salt. Open a bottle of soda and wrap the opening of the balloon around the open top of the soda bottle. When the balloon is securely attached to the opening, shake the salt into the soda.

Prepare to be amazed! As the salt reacts to the soda, the soda will expand and blow up the balloon. I suggest using big balloons for this.
