Crafting a musical yarn stick is a wonderful and engaging activity for kids. This simple yet beautiful craft involves wrapping yarn, bells, and other around sticks to create a colorful design, making it an excellent hands-on project for developing fine motor skills. Creating yarn sticks can be a meaningful way to introduce children to the concept of symbolism in art.

Inspiration Behind The Activity
Inspiration for this yarn stick activity comes from a traditional Mexican symbol called a “God’s Eye”. A “God’s Eye” is a traditional spiritual symbol made by wrapping yarn around crossed sticks, representing protection and the ability to see and understand the unknown.
The “God’s Eye” or “Ojo de Dios,” has deep roots in the cultural traditions of the Huichol and Tepehuan Indians of western Mexico. For these indigenous peoples, the yarn stick served as a spiritual symbol, representing the power to see and understand things that are beyond the physical world.

The four points, created by the crossed sticks, symbolize the elements of earth, wind, fire, and water, while the central eye is believed to offer protection and insight. Over time, this craft has been adapted in various cultures and is often used in religious education or as a symbol of God’s omnipresent watchfulness.
In a Christian context, the yarn stick can be seen as a representation of God’s ever-watchful eye, a reminder that God is always with us, guiding and protecting us. Creating a yarn stick is a meaningful way to reinforce this concept with children, making the activity not only a fun craft but also an opportunity to discuss spiritual themes. By focusing on the symbolism of the yarn stick, you can help children connect with deeper spiritual meanings while enjoying the creative process.
While I don’t believe in displaying spiritual symbols from other religions in my home (that’s for another discussion), I feel it is ok to take inspiration from beautiful things and adapt them for our purposes.
How to Make a Colorful Musical Yarn Stick

Making your own colorful yarn stick is quite simple. Let’s begin by gathering all of the necessary materials.

- Sticks of various size
- Yarn
- Tape (Optional)
- Buttons, bells, feathers, pipe cleaners, leaves, acorns, really anything you can imagine!
Construction steps:
- Begin by tying one end of yarn to the stick. If you choose to do multiple yarn colors, cut smaller pieces of various colored yarn first.
- To create a continuation of wrapped yarn, either use tape to connect the two ends of yarn or tie the ends together. Tape is the easier method, but isn’t as secure as tying the yarn.
- Attach all of the extras! Get creative! I definitely recommend bells as the stick will double as a musical shaker.
