Kids LOVE Flight!

I don’t know about your kids, but my son is absolutely mesmerized by all things related to flight. He stares at planes, helicopters, flying insects, birds, anything in the sky! Creating a fun way for him to engage with flight at home was a no brainer. This activity was created with him in mind!

Flying is the coolest!

Teaching kids about things that fly opens up a world of wonder and discovery. They learn about birds, airplanes, and insects, sparking curiosity. Understanding how objects fly introduces basic science concepts like gravity and lift. This builds a strong foundation for future learning in science and nature.

This flying crafts for kids activity is more than just fun; it’s educational. As they create rockets, birds, and planes, kids develop fine motor skills and creativity. Watching their creations soar boosts confidence and joy. This hands-on activity encourages exploration, making learning both exciting and meaningful for young minds.

What You’ll Need

Before you embark on your flying adventure, gather all necessary materials.

Here’s what you need:

  • Printable flying objects template (grab the download at the end of the article)
  • Thick straws (one for each flying object; bubble tea straws work great)
  • Thin straws (one for each flying object)
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils for decorating

Instructions:

  • Print and Decorate the Flying Object Template: Print out template and allow children to decorate the flying objects as they like.
  • Cut Out the Objects: Carefully cut out the decorated objects.
  • Prepare the Straw Launcher: Take one thick straw and cut it to be slightly longer than the flying objects. Tape one end of the straw shut, ensuring no air can escape. Tape one flying object to one end of this straw.
  • Launch: Insert the second straw into the open end of the straw attached to the object. By blowing through the second straw, the object will launch into the air.

Alternative method: I only had thin straws, so I constructed my own “thick straw” with a piece of paper. If you prefer to do this, complete the following steps.

  • Cut a square piece of paper about 2×2 inches
  • Wrap the paper around one of the thin straws, ensuring the thin straw can easily be inserted into the paper tube
  • Tape the paper shut, creating a tube
  • Tape one end of the paper tube shut, ensuring no air can escape
  • Tape the paper tube to one of the flying objects
  • Insert the second straw into the open end of the paper tube attached to the object. By blowing through the second straw, the object will launch into the air.
